Routine
The Great Egret has amazing focus
The stillness of the egret and its total concentration on fishing is impressive. That’s its job. Maybe yours, like mine, is writing a book. I’ve discovered that for me creating a working routine beats waiting for inspiration to strike.
I don’t have to wonder if ideas are going to come, or whether the stars are aligned. I know I’m going to sit down and put some effort into moving forward. I might put words on the page, do some research or brainstorm my plot. Even if I start out feeling glum and uninspired, when I rise from my office chair after the allotted time, I feel the satisfaction of having accomplished something. No matter if the result is momentous or subtle, I’m in a better place. And that feels good.
Plan a schedule that’s right for you. Whether it be half an hour, an hour, or several, choose something achievable. Then you’ll look forward to it. You can always go overtime, if the spirit moves you.
