What to reveal and when. . .

Great Egret on the Monterey Peninsula — Dec. 19, 2024

It’s all behind the scenes. . .

As a fiction writer I want to give you all the pieces of a puzzle but leave it up to you to put it together. I think of it as a contract between the reader and the writer. My job is to place you in a certain place and time, and to give you an exciting ride. Your job is to make sense of it. I want to give you just enough information to ground you and to keep you wondering what’s next. I may do some research to make scenes more authentic, but I’m only going to include information that helps move the story along. You didn’t sign up for a lecture. I don’t want you falling asleep.

It’s a tricky line to dance along. What isn’t said is all part of the fun. You don’t know what’s going to happen, or exactly where you’re going. But in each small reveal I’m giving you a new stepping stone. Even if you don’t see it that way, it’ll be there in your subconscious. I’m counting on that to keep you turning the pages.
